Friction
Friction is a force that opposes the relative motion or tendency of such motion of two surfaces in contact. It acts parallel to the surface of contact.
Types of Friction:
-
Static Friction:
- Definition: The frictional force that prevents two surfaces from sliding past each other.
- Example: A box resting on the floor does not move unless a certain amount of force is applied.
-
Sliding (or Kinetic) Friction:
- Definition: The frictional force acting between two surfaces when one is sliding over the other.
- Example: A book sliding on a table experiences sliding friction.
-
Rolling Friction:
- Definition: The frictional force when an object rolls over a surface.
- Example: A ball or a car tire rolling on the ground faces rolling friction.
-
Fluid Friction (or Drag):
- Definition: The frictional force that resists the motion of an object through a fluid (liquid or gas).
- Example: Air resistance acting on a moving car or water resistance on a swimming
